An avalanche Sunday on a snow-capped Ecuadoran volcano killed at minimum 4 climbers and wounded a fifth, officers described.
The avalanche struck a team of about a dozen mountaineers whilst at an altitude of 6,100 meters (20,000 feet) on the dormant Chimborazo volcano, Ecuador’s greatest peak, in the central Andean location, the Eu911 protection support stated.
“The existence of four lifeless people (and) a single personal injury is confirmed,” the agency said, including that “an avalanche struck the group.”
It did not detect the climbers or their nationalities, but the peak appeals to both equally Ecuadoran and international climbers.
Chimborazo, which rises 6,263 meters earlier mentioned sea amount, is covered in snow and glaciers calendar year-spherical and is positioned around the town of Riobamba, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of Quito.
